Ford Edge – Ford Shows its Edge in January

Among the 2006 North American International Auto Show introductions will be a new addition to Ford’s sport-utility lineup – the Ford Edge. The Edge uses a car platform, in this case that of the recently introduced Fusion, and adds a more powerful 250-horsepower V6 mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Lincoln also gets a version that becomes the second-generation Aviator. Ahead of the official introduction, Ford has released an illustration that gives us an idea of what the truck will look like.

Edge extends Ford’s SUV lineup to five for the 2007 model year, including Escape, Freestyle, Explorer and Expedition. (The huge Excursion is dropped with the 2006 model year.) Edge is sized and powered above Escape, though smaller than the Explorer. The Edge has a face that is similar to that of the Fusion, emphasizing its relationship to the car, rather than adopting a version of the strong truck family face found on the new-for-2007MY Explorer Sport Trac as well as Explorer and F-Series.
Gimme an Edge Over an Aviator… I Don’t Need to Spent the Extra Bucks
After seeing Aviator in the flesh and Edge in photos, I’d take the Edge. Sharing the Aviator’s package, powertrain and platform, Edge comes across as more expressive than the blandmobile Aviator that is trying too hard to be an RX330.

I think I’ve found my next SUV. Wow, if the Edge looks anything like this rendering in person, sign me up!

Edge looks pretty darn nice in this rendering. Can’t wait to see it in the flesh at the Detroit Auto Show. Guess it will be priced between Escape and Explorer, but it looks tougher than both.
    Nice job.
