Cameron Barrett:

Cars & Coffee – September 8, 2007, Irvine, CA

1

Whenever we can get up early enough on a Saturday and roll down the 5 Freeway to Irvine, we like to take in the Cars & Coffee get-together in the Ford Premier Automotive Group parking lot. This Saturday was special because Morgan Patrick joined our video team as ace interviewer. You will be able to see her video podcasts over the coming weeks.

Morgan Patrick discusses Bugatti Veyron with VehicleVoice producer David Barrett and cameraperson Cameron Barrett

The story behind Morgan’s arrival at VehicleVoice begins with her brother Keagan who is a car-nut staffer at AutoPacific. Keagan writes many VehicleVoice stories and has been seen on several of our video podcasts. After watching the video-casts, Keagan suggested that we add female interviewers to the mix to spice it up and get the attention of younger male viewers.
Well, a week or so later, Keagan’s sister, Morgan, showed up at AutoPacific offices in a friend’s Lamborghini. Not only was she in an outasight car, but she could talk about it intelligently. Putting two and two together, we come up with five and Morgan has joined our VehicleVoice team.

Here are some shots from the latest Cars & Coffee. Quite an eclectic group this week ranging from a 1912 Mercedes 3795 recently purchased by the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center in Irvine to a Bugatti Veyron.

“Are you from the EPA? Are you from CARB? Are you from the DMV? No? OK, I can talk.” A line-up of Nissan Skyline GT-Rs caught the attention of almost everyone who has ever played a videogame.

This week, the all-new VehicleVoice podcast takes you to the Monterey Historic Races at the Mazda Laguna Seca Raceway. Trackside!
This is one of our very favorite automotive events each year. The Historics are everything auto enthusiasts hope for. Where else can you see a Bentley from the 1920s competing on the same track that hosts the American Le Mans series? Race cars from the genesis of the sport, all the way up to the current Toyota F1 car took to the track this weekend, and we were there…with cameras and microphones, to bring it to you.
The races aren’t the only event that takes place during the Historics. The Concours de Elegance at Pebble Beach brings million-dollar trailer queens together to strut their stuff before hitting the auction block. The Concorso Italiano features so many gorgeous Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Fiats, Lancias and Maseratis, it’s hard to think straight amidst all the red paint. And MINI claimed the weekend as their own this year as well, celebrating the featured Historics’ marque, Cooper. They introduced their new MINI Cooper GP and kicked off a two-week cross-country drive of MINI enthusiasts.
We were there for it all, and we begin our coverage with an audio podcast that will have you drooling over the sounds of Maseratis from the 50s, 60s American muscle cars, and the incredible song of Toyota’s F1 race car, driven to a track record by none other than Ricardo Zonta.
Hear it all right here!

This week on Let’s Talk Cars, a very special treat, not just for our lucky test driver, but for you, the viewer! VehicleVoice correspondent David Barrett got a chance to take a Ferrari 360 Spyder on the Southern California test track at El Toro. When he caught his breath, he took out the new Corvette Z06 for a spin and a little comparison. I tried to hold the camera steady in the front seat. It was awesome, and you can experience it yourself right here! If you’re prone to motion sickness, take your medicine.

In the something a little bit tamer category, next we bring you a review of Ford’s Explorer Sport Trac, the most innovative member of the Explorer family.

And finally, we do a little reading. Yeah, I said reading. After all those engines revving and tires smoking, can you blame me? A new book by automotive luminaries Charlie Hughes and William Jeanes takes on the American Automotive Industry. It’s called Branding Iron and we got a chance to ask the authors about the book’s message and the future of such companies as Ford and GM.

This week on Let’s Talk Cars, more from our slew of new car reviews, walk arounds and test drives – Chevrolet HHR, Nissan Pathfinder, and a base-model Volkswagen Passat with a peppy 6-speed manual transmission.

First, VehicleVoice correspondent David Barrett climbs inside Chevy’s take on the PT Cruiser. The HHR has a lot of great things going for it, including its fun, retro looks, but a lack of horsepower and some styling issues come up in our review.

Next, host Cameron Barrett brings you this week’s Rev It Up – with 90-seconds on the Nissan Pathfinder. This medium-sized SUV isn’t afraid to get its wheels dirty or its tow ring used.

And finally, we drive a base model Volkswagen Passat, one of the best values out there for your money. But the excellent 6-speed transmission causes some heartache because of its lack of availability in higher end models. The Passat won AutoPacific’s coveted 2006 Vehicle Satisfaction Award for Premium Mid-Size Cars.

This week on Let’s Talk Cars, it’s all about the test drive. Which is how we’ve been spending our summer vacations. We’ve compiled a slew of new car reviews and walk arounds and test drives, and we’ve got the first three for you this week – the new Dodge Caliber, the controversial Nissan Quest and the not-ready-for-the-American-marketplace Mitsubishi “i”.

First, VehicleVoice correspondent David Barrett takes a bright orange Caliber for a spin, and finds some surprising goodies on the inside.

Next, host Cameron Barrett introduces you to our new review segment, Rev It Up – with 90-seconds on the Nissan Quest, perhaps the most controversial a minivan can get. We review the 2006 Quest just prior to its replacement by the 2007 model with a less controversial interior design.

And finally, the Let’s Talk Cars’ crew got a peek at a car that isn’t even for sale here in the U.S., and will never be. They say big things come in small packages, and if that’s true, the Mitsubishi “i” is defintely the next big thing!

First, “Let’s Talk Cars” host Cameron Barrett chats up AutoPacific’s newest analyst Keagan Patrick about the IVAs – that’s the Ideal Vehicle Awards. Being new, Keegan didn’t know enough to run in the other direction when he saw the Let’s Talk Cars crew bearing down on him. Thanks for the interview, Keagan!

Next, VehicleVoice correspondent David Barrett takes the Mitsubishi Endeavor – winner of the AutoPacific Vehicle Satisfaction Award for Premium Mid-Size Sport Utilities – out for a test drive and interviews Mitsubishi stylist Robert Burns. Robert was responsible for Endeavor’s 2006 facelift.

And finally, we ambushed a young family, handed over Suzuki’s Grand Vitara – winner of AutoPacific’s Vehicle Satisfaction Award for its class, and asked them to get their baby seat in and out of this compact SUV. Oh yeah, and then we asked if they could get their baby in and out of it. See how baby Elijah held up in this unique test drive.

This week in Let’s Talk Cars, we welcome Castrol as our new sponsor. Thanks Castrol and welcome aboard!
Accessories…aftermarket car accessories to be exact. You’d have to look hard to find an industry growing as fast. Which is exactly why we sat down with automotive accessories expert, Mark Greeley of Newport Custom, to find out more about what’s being done to cars once they’re driven off the showroom floor.
And speaking of showroom floor, chances are you’ll be seeing a lot of Crossovers on them in the next few months. What’s a crossover? We’ll tell you in this episode.
