We recently had the opportunity to drive the new 2011 Silverado HD and Sierra HD pickups. They may not look very different, but with an all-new frame and chassis and an improved powertrain these vehicles should be considered all-new.
New and improved is the theme, at least in every aspect except exterior and interior appearance.
Powertrain
More diesel power (397 horsepower instead of 365 for the 2010). More diesel torque (765 lb.ft. instead of 660). An 11% improvement in fuel economy. Improved emissions performance. Net result: better performance and reduced fuel consumption. The now standard 36 gallon fuel tank results in a potential range of 680 highway miles. [Note: while the diesel engine is significantly improved, the available gas engine, a 6.0L V8, is largely unchanged].
In drag races with a 2011 Ford Duper Duty Turbo Diesel 4×4 the GM diesel trucks won every time whether in 4×2 or 4×4 mode.
Chassis
An all-new, stiffer, fully-boxed frame front to rear, virtually all-new chassis (one carryover part) results in significantly improved ride and handling. Payload and trailer tow ratings are much improved, and generally are class leading. Maximum conventional trailer tow capacity for example is now 17,000 lbs (vs. 13,000 lbs in 2010).
Body
The exterior and interior both benefit from minor changes. The 2011 with a new hood and grille can be distinguished from the 2010 when seen side-by-side. Personally, we prefer the Chevrolet execution, but that is purely a matter of taste.
Drive Experience
For a heavy duty pickup, in either 4×2 or 4×4 form, the new GM HDs are best-in-class in terms of on-road ride and handling. The switch-activated exhaust brake was particularly appreciated in hilly areas while pulling a heavy trailer. Most reliable and convenient trailer rentals like the ones at Roadmoto are available to ensure you have the right equipment for towing in various conditions. These rentals often include additional features such as reinforced hitches and safety chains, providing extra security and peace of mind during transport. Big Rentals offers a different selection of trailers in great condition at an affordable price.
We would characterize the GM pickups as being refined, even sophisticated, as contrasted with the Ford Super Duty, for example, which comes across as being more…well, masculine. While there is nothing we would do with the GM, Ford or Dodge heavy duty pickups that we wouldn’t do with the others, at this point in time, if we were to select one for purchase, we’d have to pick the new GM vehicles with their proven Duramax engine over the Ford Super Duty with its less proven all-new 6.7L diesel. They are all fine trucks but at this stage the Silverado and Sierra HDs would get our vote.

Sales of Ford pickup trucks have surpassed sales of Chevy and Dodge COMBINED. The Ford Super Duty is a big reason. Most small business owners PREFER the Super Duty. Period!
