Primedia's AUTOMOBILE MAGAZINE, not to be left behind in the automotive awards category by its Motor Trend stablemate (you remember, Car of the Year, Truck of the Year, SUV of the Year), has announced its winners of Automobile of the Year, Design of the Year, Technology of the Year and Man of the Year Awards.
Motor Trend announced that the redesigned Chevrolet Silverado is its 2007 Truck of the Year(TM). The complete report on Motor Trend's 2007 Truck of the Year will be published in the February issue, available on newsstands January 2, 2007.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has just released their first crash ratings for Economy Compact Cars. They call them "minicars". The IIHS often releases results like this to pressure car makers to achieve higher safety results than are required by the Federal Government (NHTSA). Being part of the insurance industry, the IIHS charter is to provide information that consumers can use to select a safer car or light truck - and hence a car that might generate lower personal injury claims in an accident.
Automobile Magazine has released its 2007 All Stars Awards
Autobytel, a lead-generating company for auto dealers has just released their "Editors' Choice Awards". This is another of those awards that you wonder what the validity is? First, it is for NEW Vehicles only - not all available vehicles. Unlike the AutoPacific Vehicle Satisfaction Awards and Ideal Vehicle Awards released each summer, Autobytel's award does not factor consumer input into the equation. In fact, AutoPacific's awards are purely based on consumer ratings. Autobytel's award is just their own opinion and internal calculations as near as we can tell. WITHOUT DATA, IT'S ONLY OPINION!

Motor Trend Magazine has selected the 2007 Mercedes-Benz GL450 as its 2007 SUV of the Year. The GL is a Premium Luxury Sport Utility Vehicle that moves for the first time in 2007 to a unit body construction. GL is a clear step up in the Mercedes SUV lineup. It is assembled in Mercedes' Alabama plant along with the smaller ML-Class and the struggling R-Class "Grand Sports Tourer" (what is that?). Well, there is no doubt what the GL is... an SUV.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety announces 13 vehicles that earn TOP SAFETY PICK awards for 2007. Winners include 4 cars, 7 SUVs, and 2 minivans. This award recognizes vehicles that do the best job of protecting people in front, side, and rear crashes based on ratings in Institute tests. Winners also have to be equipped with electronic stability control (ESC).
